What am I without you
Who am I if you are not there
Where would I be if you disappear
I am you, you are me
It's us against the world

Lips art exhibition was themed around the selfie, not a normal selfie you take with a phone but how each artist definitely selfie in their own way. Some themes of the exhibition was memes, technology, growing, and adulthood. Each artist address identity and the selfie differently. They take a different perspective on the selfie. Some are personal like the memes and others are more broad like the mothering child image.
Stephanie Quispilays "Growing up" portrait was my most favorite of the exhibition. The image is nine drawings of herself. Each one of her drawings in the image are basically mothering each other. It gives off a sense as if she's frowning she must mother herself. With this image I really connected with the concept. Her explanation basically describes me and my experience. How Stephanie is trying to mother herself and equally take care of all her needs but it is very difficult. This image represent self because it is something all people go through when maturing. Trying to balance everything in life and how hard it is to do so.
Meredith Goncalves portrayal of the selfie sparked my interest as well. How she put her selfies with a meme theme was very unique. Her selfies give off a not so funny vibe as normal memes do. It was a different way to spin off the normal meme. All the memes had criticism on them, as if everything she did in life even if it was right was constantly being judged negatively by society. Like how one little thing she does has a negative comment to follow which is the meme. This represent self because it's what Meredith has went through and how she's over coming all the negativity in her life.
I believe the artists and curators are trying to tell the gallery audience how everyone goes through things in life and how they can express them differently. Also how women are mostly faced with judgement yet find a way to deal with it and balance out all the negativity in their life. I think my art really relates to these women work, how I want to show the fact that women always push through in the end no matter the troubles they face.
