I got inspired by one of Frida's painting to make this selfie using one of my favorite things about my country Dominican Republic, which is the night sky when the lights go out.
This is my life full of light fading into darkness and death.

The selfie I have chosen for today is a selfie of my oldest cat and myself together and I feel like it represents life. My first cat past away of an illness along with a kitten that has past away this year and my oldest Cat Lu Lu is healthy along with my black Kitten Mini. There both full of life and love for each other and my family. Both of my cats wonder around the house trying to look for me so they can return the love that I always give them. The picture also resembles death because it's a photo for my future for when my oldest Cat Lu lu passes on. I'm happy that she has lived a long great life and will help teach mini how to be strong.

Death

I'm soooo sorry but for some reason I cannot find the professors email. And this is the only way I can think of to get in contact with her. But professor I will not be able to make it into class today because I am moving. But I have the books and I will still do the assignment.  Thank you! See you next week! Btw: I LOVE nicole's picture!
My selfie this week has to do with death. I used makeup and fake blood to make it look as if I died and started bleeding from my eyes, nose, and  mouth. This is what comes to mind when i think of death. Death is cruel. It scares me but also is intriguing to observe.

Quotes from the introduction:

"...I draw on this idea to argue that deception and invention frame the production of every individual's ordinary social life" pg.2

"...'what you see is not what it is'" pg.9

The reading talked much about how everything around us is shown a certain way, which may not be the truth. Everyone puts on different masks/personas to different people and only show what they want to be shown. The author also talked much about Hollywood and how everything there is made up of deception and lies. It shows a good example to not believe in everything you see. Many of our personas are molded by what society and media puts out into the world.

Death

My selfies show the two times I have experienced death. The right shows me looking out the window after just learning my grandfather passed away after being ill for months. On the left shows me in the bathroom, the exact place where I was when I learned my godfather passed away in an accident. I feel as if selfies are more to than just to show a pretty face, they can show emotions you intend to hide, but they betray you and come out in the picture. Sure you may look happy or fine in a picture but an image is worth a thousand words and you no longer can wear the facade, and you end up showing people how you really feel.
"What we see is not what we get. The buisness of mass media is to train audiences to read images and representation in predictable ways"

My picture has a lot more to do with death than life. Death can be seen as tragic and a painful experience, but my experience with death has always been peaceful. Both my grandparents passed away from old age, and a friend of my mom has past away recently from battling with cancer. I can understand why it can be sad to lose someone we love, but if we look at it from their perspective it can be peaceful. They have been on this earth for too long and some are even in pain. It can be calming when you know it is your time to go.

The reading  talked about a persona that each of us adapt when we are out in life, but in a way of deception. In the beginning of the introduction it speaks of deception and lies, while all of use use, we should not take the world as full of chaos. I liked how the author also used actors and actress as a way people device. Technically she is correct to say that Hollywood does so. We can also get a lot of how we portray ourselves to other people through the reading discussed. Sometimes our image changes, depending on who we are with.
Quote 1:" Through close up, thoughts are made visible"
Quote 2:" Chapter 4 advertising begins with an example of an advertisement for a new car that promises to deliver sexual pleasure"

Cindy Sherman is a contemporary master of socially critical photography. She is a key figure of the "Pictures Generation," a loose circle of American artists who came to artistic maturity and critical recognition during the early 1980s, a period notable for the rapid and widespread generation of mass media imagery. When turning the camera on herself in a game of extended role playing of fantasy Hollywood, fashion, mass advertising, and "girl-next-door" roles and poses, She ultimately called my attention to the powerful machinery and make-up that lay behind the countless images circulating in a constantly public, "plugged in" culture.

Janis did something similar showing how people can change themselves by changing the way they look even if it means going for more of a grayer tone of images. Janis used her artwork to interpret how she sees herself as alter egos of one’s inner emotions and personality.

The image I chose shows the real me. I love having fun with my close friends and we love to go to places and travel. We are all anime nerds which is so awesome. They are family to me, we know how one another is feeling by just reading there text message. We share a bond so close that nothing can slit us apart.

Janis Maschucci

Janis

Janis is an amazing self-image artist that recreates amazing portraits of herself using classic ideas. My personal favorite was the Cruella De Ville portrait because it takes me back to the old memories of how the 90s use to thrive off great creativity. I also like it because Cruella's look is a classical style of great fashion in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Her other artwork like Wonder Woman is also a classic look for the old costume that the original Wonder Woman started off with. What makes her art work so great is that she uses old ideas from the past and brings them back to life in today's world as a way of saying they are still the best style even in today's world. She brought back looks like the house wife, Geisha, Cleopatra, hippie, and Cruella De Vill.
Cindy Sherman is one of the best and well known photographers today. She works in series, usually photographing herself in different costumes. All of the work she has she does by herself. She shows people that everyone has more than one identity. She also shows that a person can be whatever they want to be.

The picture I have chosen shows my fun self, the one that is shown to most people I meet. I enjoy the outdoors more than I do the city, and I’m always going out of my way to be adventurous.

Much like Cindy Sherman’s work, Janis’s paintings show the different identities that people can be. She even goes deep to show the darker, sadder self’s. Like in her paintings “Pretty in Pink”. I feel those showed the pressure of how girls are pressured to look perfect. They always should have a nice body, perfect hair, perfect face. Her paintings show the stress this could put on a person and the emotions most girls hide on the inside.

who am I?

This is who I am. I am a person who thinks highly of myself but others will never know because I am humble, not because I am better than others, have more knowledge or materialistic things, but because I know my worth.. And that is why I chose this picture (hint: the crown). I am loud, energetic, blunt and spunky but I try to hide that side from people because they take my kindness for weakness.
Cindy Sherman expresses herself by doing something that she liked to do, dressing up in costumes. She did not do it to get a political uproar out of society, nor did she do it to leave a message behind it, she did it because she was fascinated with it.
When we visited Janis Maschucci's art exhibit, she spoke to us and said she used the artwork to express herself and her alter ego's. Janis used her artwork to interpret how she seen herself while Cindy Sherman did it because it was something she liked to do. Cindy Sherman's paintings did not have an intentional message behind it, while some of Janis Maschucci's work did.
These two artist has made me realize that even though a picture might now have a intentional meaning behind it you can always make one for yourself, there is no right or wrong, and always do something that brings out the best in you!!

Who am I?

This is who I am. This is who I consider myself to be. I like to see myself as someone who's expressive, being able to show off my multiple qualities. I can act cocky, humble, crazy, sophisticated, masculine, or feminine. I do not care what people think of me. I like being normal, but I like being weird as well. Fitting in just for the sake of fitting in, being popular, is overrated in my eyes. It's fun to be weird, to contradict social norms on gender, to be expressive. Not fitting in is the most unique thing I, or anybody for that matter, can do. However, this is an example of only one of my many qualities, much like most, if not all, of Janis' and Cindy's works.

Like many artists, Janis felt inspired by Cindy's particular art of the self photograph. Every photograph, that Cindy Sherman took, told a story. Every photo was a character of her invention, to personify a fragment of what makes up her personality. Some were weird. Some were, simply, normal. Regardless, Cindy wanted us to see a story with each photograph, and Janis, in her own way, replicated this style.

There were several interesting pieces in Janis Maschucci's exhibit, including her portraying Wonder Woman, Cleopatra, Marilyn Monroe, and several others. These are just a few of the many portraits in her exhibit, but they tell so much. From an outside perspective, such as my own, one could get the idea that Janis aspires to be powerful like Cleopatra, strong like Wonder Woman, or as beautiful as Monroe, or perhaps they represent how she perceives the difference aspects of her personality, as I suggested before.

who am i

This is me a risk taker i don't mind being different i don't mind fitting in i just want to be myself.
i picked this picture because this is me being me. Going outside showing the hard body i worked on to achieve these past few years. i love what i do and who i am i express my body a lot even though i get a lot of people who don't like it but i don't pay mind to them. i just want to have fun and hopefully motivate others to go out and find a hobby and be the best in it.
Cindy sherman was a very influential person in the 70's. She expressed who she was and how other women could be by her photos. Its like different people who have a different story to their own back ground. It makes you wonder how you could turn out to be if things were different in your life.
I think tthe main idea of cindy sherman work was the different personalities she has when she made a self portrait
Janis from the gallery was inspired by cindy sherman as we can tell from her art work. she incorporated cindy sherman thought but made it into her own style with the wonder women, medusa etc. janis as she mention started doing art late in her life but as i looked through her photos i can tell that she loves herself and who she has become. She also wants to take what she has learned from cindy sherman and bring it into her own style.

Charielle Molina Who Am I ?

Just who am I ? I am someone who on the outside appears cool, collected, kind, helpful, and
smart. On the inside there's a different story. I can feel sad, alone, stressed, anxious, and selfish. This
is the side I hide from most of the world. I often struggle to be a good person while I feel sometimes feel malevolent. Although lately I have been learning to be more happy and to deal with the constent anxiety I face in my life. Throughout my life I have learned that I'm very different from my family, I grew up uninterested in my family's culture and traditions and would rather spend time in my room reading, drawing, listening to music. I don't act like I'm hispanic, I act like a big nerd, only interested in comics and pop culture, and I'm happy with that. I am my own person, and I want to lead a happy life. To the world, I feel like I'm another part of it, a part that aims to see the world get better, and become part of that process to make many people's lives happy.

The picture I have taken shows a combination of the gallery's work, Cindy Sherman's ideology and modern photography. The use of snap chat as the filter helps create the illusion of the dog. It is meant to be fun, and whatever meaning you wish to create from it is your own choice. It is inspired by the gallery because it would be kind of fun to be someone else for a day.

Cindy Sherman's work was a foundation for many photographers that came after her. She made people question who they were, because she was showing in her photographs the different identities she could become. It was fascinating to read how her photographs changed the playing field for at itself.

The gallery was also very fascinating. I could see her works were inspired by Cindy's works. She was portraying herself in different paintings. None of her photographs or paintings really had a specific idea in mind, which is one of the reason I liked it. Cindy Sherman even says "The art world was ready for something new, something beyond painting", and she did deliver on that.

First Time on Blogger

Hello everyone first time blogging on this sight hoping to have loads of fun selfies!

Syllabus

Self: I As Image  FA 2016
Mondays 4:00pm - 7:20pm
Prof. Doris Cacoilo
dcacoilo at gmailllll

Course Description
Through the use of photography, computer graphics and mixed media this course will think about the increasingly complex relationship between our hyper-visual world of imagery and how we constantly navigate our own visual identity.

This is a general education course that is paired with the Tier 2 course, I as Body.

Self: I as Image uses core themes of self-identity and imagery to explore, enrich and empower students to understand self and identity within a context of creative approaches to visual communication. Maintaining a positive sense of self and identity requires a continual process of meta-awareness of the role of imagery in self identity, visual communication and the cultural production of values and ideals.

This course uses a multi-faceted approach to understanding imagery that combines visual observation, cultural analysis, creative projects, contemplation and formal knowledge. This course addresses a need to have the language, knowledge, experience and critical tools necessary to explore the role images play in contemporary society and culture.

This course encourages a broader consideration of citizenship by thinking critically about the relationship of identity, images, values and ideals in a highly complex visual world. Conscientious citizenship is also honed by examining cultural representations of people and bodies and the affect these visual representations have on personal, social and cultural values and ideals.

Course Requirements and Grading

Our class time will be split between discussion, lecture, studio time and presentations.  While in discussion please be respectful of the opinions of others even if they stand diametrically opposed to your own. You must be in class ON TIME and prepared for class each week. Failure to do so will be reflected in your participation grade. Failure to do so consistently can lead to failure in the course.

READINGS Various weekly reading assignments will be assigned from your required texts and linked on the blog. The full reading schedule will be distributed on the class blog. Readings are due each week. All readings are REQUIRED unless otherwise stated.

CLASS PARTICIPATION Attendance and participation in the class discussion when appropriate and in critique and comments on the blog and twitter is part of your participation grade. For each week’s readings you must create a quick self portrait in response to that week's readings and themes. You must also and write a brief description of some of the points that strike you from that week’s readings. I will often collect these. Please have them written or typed on a sheet of paper you can hand to me with your name on it each week. You must be able to show the self portrait to the class. They can be quick digital images but must be thoughtful and well explained.  I will call on students each week during discussion to read and discuss these 'selfies'. You must have these prepared for each reading.
TWITTER You must create a twitter account (if you do not have one already) we will share links and comments with each other using the class hashtag: #selfiasimage

WRITING ASSIGNMENTS You must consult the class blog weekly (even several times per week) to check for announcements, readings and to post your project updates and writing assignments. The blog is crucial to the course and completion of the requirements. You MUST have access to the blog to complete assignments, readings, post work and comment on students’ posts.

CLASS PRESENTATIONS: Students will each present the work of an artist who works with the self and self portraiture as a recurring theme in their work. Presentations must be between 10-15 minutes and should include a short discussion with the class. Presentations must include a visual presentation of images, video or other materials to help illustrate the work. Students will present once throughout the semester. This schedule will be determined in class on the second week of classes.

SEMESTER PROJECT
Signature Assignment Example: Self-Portrait

This is a two part project that asks students to measure experience over time and contemplate how we value images and the role that plays in navigating our own visual identity.

Part 1: MIDTERM Using processes including collage, assemblage, frottage, drawing and painting each student will compose an image that captures a self-portrait. In both written form and group discussion we will explore the following questions in group critique.

• What is the subject of your image?
• What is the content of your image?
• Why did you make the choices that led to the composition?
• What do you think this image conveys to the viewers?

Part 2: FINAL Choosing any one or combination of processes that you have explored during the semester, compose an image that captures a self-portrait. Through an oral and visual presentation of your works, explain the following to the class:

• What is the subject of your image?
• What is the content of your image?
• Why did you make the choices that led to the composition?
• Explain the process and steps you went through and why you made those decisions.
• How you would categorize your work (ex. collage, graphic print, mixed media, etc).
• What artists or works are appropriate to compare your work to?
• What do you think this image conveys to the audience?
• What are the differences between the first self-portrait and your last self-portrait?
• What influenced these changes?

Grading
Attendance is mandatory and all assignments must be finished and handed in on time to receive a passing grade for this course.

40% semester project
30% 3 blog posts
10% presentation
20% attendance/participation/twitter/weekly selfie

Attendance
Attendance is, to put it simply, mandatory.

Attendance is taken at the beginning of each class, and will be considered when determining the final course grade. Absences affect your participation grade. More than four (4) unexcused absences will result in an 'F' (failure) for the class. No exceptions. Class begins on time, so you must be punctual. Lateness, leaving early or leaving class unexcused for an extended period of time will also be recorded. Two of these instances will count as one absence. You must bring documentation to class and hand in to me for any absences to be excused.

You are required to make up any and all work that is missed if you are absent. Notify the professor if you will be absent. As work will not be accepted late, please contact the professor to hand in work on time. It is your responsibility to get any missed work or notes from other students in the class and to discuss any problems or questions you have with the professor.

NOTE: BACK-UP your work frequently, even as you are working on your writing assignments and on your projects. Write and edit your posts locally before uploading them to the web. No excuses.
